Well, as some of you know (THANK YOU! for reading and reviewing) I am working on two concurrent stories.
Drawn Into the Light http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3125713/1/
and
Whisper, in Smokey Light http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3166823/1/
I am trying to determine how much people can deal with the level of suspense I am currently presenting.
Part of me hates to leave people hanging. Part of me likes it... in the way that tv shows can leave you wanting to come back for more.
If I had to do it over, I would have not jumped into the second story before completing the first... but what's done is done. And I don't have the Green Guy's power to make you forget.
Or do I??
Basically, and without ruining things, since these two are part of the same universe, both will end up with a bit of the reader hanging... Nothing will really be resolved before the third book - which in my opinion is the most important book. And even there... who knows? I may have a fourth book in mind... if people can deal with it...
So my questions are:
Does the style of posting chapter by chapter really bother people?
How much resolution can you expect? Meaning - does a case have to be solved by the last chapter - like in the series? Or Can people hold the plots long enough to get to the next book. I know for tv, people can often wait all summer for the cliffhanger resolution. But with reading fanfic, it may not be as easy.
Will not having a story self contained completely be a violation of sorts? I know some of you are reading almost everything that comes out. But I hate to annoy the casual fanfic reader. I don't want someone to be angry at feeling obliged to read on. I want them to be excited at receiving the author/story alerts in their e-mail!
Ok. Any thoughts and feedback would be appreciated. Again, I don't want to spoil too much, especially for a series that is all about the mystery. But if you have questions, let me know. ...

This depends on person to person. Personally, the only time I have a problem with it is if people leave you hanging... but never finish it. That's why I wait until the story's completed before I post.

Again, depends on the reader. You can do both, but make sure in your title on fanfiction.net (summary) that you mention it's part of a series.

To be honest, I think the only way you'll tick off anyone is if you say you're writing the story and don't finish it (permanent hiatus). I'll admit, I've done it once, but something happened to the story and it was delayed posting. It's also one of my more popular stories.
I do have one question, how can the two stories link together? I can see "Whisper, In Smokey Light" connecting to another story of yours, but not the first. Can you give me a hint (even through PM) about how the two connect? Otherwise, both are great, and look forward to reading more.

Huh? You see the story linking to something else?
Hints? You really want to spoil it for yourself? You probably open your Xmas presents the night before too... or worse, sneak into your parents closets to find where they hide them, open them up, then stick them back in hiding...
Let me finish WISL first. If it is so unclear still, I will have some opportunities in DITL to clarify a few things.
Heh. WISL and DITL.... say that fast...

I have enough fun trying to say my proper name without stumbling, let alone alphabet soup.
No, I don't cheat and open my presents soon, and as far as spoilers, I tend to forget them anyway (believe me... I do this a lot.)

Ok, I posted chapters 1-9 of the first book - Whisper, In Smokey Light- on the boards.
It's rated T-M, so it's in the password protected area. Mac, Billswoman, etc... you read this. So far there is nothing really bad. I personally see it as rated T, but there is a bit of cursing and violence. So if you think it's M, I'll keep it there.
This is what I have so far. Please rate and review...
Chapters 1-9, a work in progress.

Jo, I'm playing catch-up, so I'll share my thoughts on your above questions later tonight, I'm at work right now.
As for the rating... I don't think it's anywhere near M rated yet. But hey, that's just me.

Does the style of posting chapter by chapter really bother people?
Doesn't bother me, as long as chapters are put up on a semi-regular basis. I've found too many stories started months or years ago that haven't been updated since then. My main gripe is your chapters are too short but then again, I'm greedy and want more more more!
How much resolution can you expect? Meaning - does a case have to be solved by the last chapter - like in the series?
Not knowing where you're ultimately going to go, and simply based on what you ask above, I'd say I'd like a particular case to be solved by the end of that story. Now, if one case ends up being tied into another one, which would be a great surprise for the reader, that'd be cool too.
Or Can people hold the plots long enough to get to the next book. I can, using what I think people call the overall "arc" of the series.
I know for tv, people can often wait all summer for the cliffhanger resolution. But with reading fanfic, it may not be as easy.
I can wait, for both TV show cliffhangers and fanfic, as long as I'm confident we'll know, eventually, not left hanging forever.
Will not having a story self contained completely be a violation of sorts?
I don't think so. Having something that leads into the next story, or ties into a parallel story, is fine. Two of my favorite trilogies are like that: they actually occur around the same time-frame, but from two points of views of the characters.
I know some of you are reading almost everything that comes out. But I hate to annoy the casual fanfic reader. I don't want someone to be angry at feeling obliged to read on. I want them to be excited at receiving the author/story alerts in their e-mail!
I know what you mean. I was just thinking of the individual stories of my three series, and I think each could be read stand-alone for the casual fanfic reader, but each of them kind of alludes to something coming down the pike, that the reader can choose to read or leave it at the single story.
If I understand you correctly, your two current stories aren't necessarily one takes place after the other, but occurring around the same time frame, and a third story is going to sort of cap it all off? That'd be cool. I'm dying to know where the two are going in all this, and can't wait for more updates!
I know IRL you've got a lot of real (meaning professional) writing to do, so I'm hoping you can take the rare break to indulge in fanfic writing

Thanks, sk. Glad to see you here again!! We all missed ya.
And thanks for the feedback. I have been so bad about this writing, but you hit the head on the nail... or the nail on the head? Ugh. Just dealing more with real life right now... Depending on holiday plans, I will try to wrap some of this up by the end of December.
Ack! and the Yuletide Fanfic exchange is also due! Ack!

A good way to keep busy with fanfic so you can get the Yuletide exchange done... find that channel that has the Yule log burning and Christmas carols going on... and on... an on... for about 48 to 60 hours. That'll keep you interested in writing.
This series has been great and I look forward to reading more of it. Afterall, gotta see what happens to Ralph, Pam, Bill and the kids.

Thanks guys!!
Well, by the time the whole arc is done, people will either love my writing, or HATE IT!!! I have a feeling a few may even start calling foul!
Warning. I have some big curve balls coming. So duck!!
I wish I could finish it all now. I just finished my FEMSLASH one. Can't figure out if it was noir or a happy ending... hmmmm...
Anyway, one down.
